Jerry L Maynard - Bio

Inspired by Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and the impact an attorney of integrity could have on a community, Maynard chose law as his profession. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1989 and Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1993 from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana.

In 1989, Maynard began his professional career as a Financial Analyst for Harris bank & Trust in Chicago, IL before returning to law school in 1991. In 1993, Maynard began his legal career at Cincinnati's largest law firm, Dinsmore & Shohl, representing a number of Fortune 500 clients in the areas of banking, real estate, healthcare, construction, commercial lending, and faith-based nonprofit organizations.

Next, Maynard joined Meharry Medical College in 1996 as the Director of Legal Affairs and Risk Management, serving on the executive leadership team that completed $118 million dollars of capital improvements to the campus. Maynard served as General Counsel for Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center, Inc. for ten years and currently serves as a Metropolitan Government Council Member At-Large. Councilman Maynard serves on the Budget & Finance and is Chairman of the Parks and Recreation Committee.

Maynard is a leader in the Democratic Party. In 2004, he served as the Tennessee Outreach Director for Senator John Kerry's Presidential campaign, helping register over 41,000 new voters in Davidson County. In 2005, Jerry was selected to serve as the Deputy Chairman of the Tennessee Democratic Party under Chairman Bob Tuke, where he was responsible for the Party's day-to-day operations. In 2006, Maynard served as the Tennessee Outreach Coordinator for Congressman Harold Ford, Jr.'s campaign for U.S. Senate and was elected to the Tennessee Democratic Executive Committee for Senate District 19. In 2008, Maynard was elected to serve on the Democratic National Committee's Standing Committee on Credentials representing President-Elect Barak Obama.

With a great-grandfather, a grandfather and two parents who serve as pastors, Maynard accepted his appointment of Sr. Pastor for Southside Community Church in 2008. In 1998 he also served as the Project Manager for the construction of the new $5.7 million, 2,000 seat church facility, Cathedral of Praise Church, Inc, which his father pastors.

Maynard has served as an Adjunct Professor for Fisk University, Meharry Medical College and Tennessee State University teaching Health Law, Business Law and Ethics.

He has volunteered on the governing boards for the Watkins College of Art Institute, Northwest YMCA, Jefferson Street United Merchants Partnership, Inc. (J.U.M.P.), Cathedral of Praise, Inc. (formerly Pentecostal Tabernacle Church, Inc.), City of Life, C.D.C, and the Living Word Affordable Housing Corporation. In 2004, he helped raise over $70,000 for the Northwest YMCA as chairman of the Major Gifts Fundraising Committee. In 2005, Jerry helped secure nearly $100,000 in funding for J.U.M.P.

Jerry Maynard is married to Teresa Maynard and has two children, a daughter Jamille (20) and a son, Jordan (5).
